Nearly 170 Filipinos working in the United Arab Emirates are currently undergoing treatment for cancer, according to records from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, highlighting the extent of serious health cases among overseas Filipino workers in the country.
Data from OWWA show that 110 Filipino cancer patients are based in Abu Dhabi, while 60 others are receiving treatment in Dubai. The cases involve workers from various employment sectors who require continued medical care while remaining in the host country.
OWWA Administrator PY Caunan confirmed the figures and said the agency continues to stay in contact with affected workers and their families. She said OWWA remains involved in supporting access to medical treatment for Filipino cancer patients in the UAE as part of its welfare mandate.
The assistance is extended through OWWA’s medical and welfare programs, which provide financial support to eligible members dealing with serious illnesses. These forms of aid are designed to supplement existing health coverage and help offset the cost of hospitalization and treatment, whether abroad or upon return to the Philippines.
Support for overseas Filipino workers is being carried out alongside increased government funding this year. Under the 2026 national budget, the Department of Migrant Workers and its attached agencies received higher allocations, with OWWA allotted ₱4.285 billion to fund welfare services such as medical assistance, emergency aid, and on-site support for overseas workers.
