OWWA reminds OFWs to renew their membership every two years to keep benefits active

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has reminded all Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) that their OWWA membership is only valid for two years, regardless of whether they still have an active Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC).

In a Facebook post on Monday, the agency clarified a common misconception that OWWA membership automatically remains valid as long as an OFW holds an OEC.

“Akala mo forever? 😅 OWWA membership = 2 years lang ang validity!” the agency said in a lighthearted message. “Kaya kung gusto mong tuloy-tuloy ang proteksyon at benepisyo, wag kalimutang mag-renew!”

A featured infographic further debunks the myth, stating:
MYTH: “Hangga’t may OEC ako, automatic na akong OWWA member forever.”
FACT: “Ang OWWA membership ay valid for 2 years. Kailangang ito i-renew para tuloy-tuloy ang benepisyo.”

OWWA membership is crucial as it gives OFWs access to essential welfare services, including:

Repatriation and emergency assistance

Medical and disability support

Scholarships for dependents

Reintegration programs for returning OFWs

Legal aid and livelihood opportunities

To remain eligible for these programs, OFWs must ensure their membership is active and renewed every two years. Renewal can be done online or through OWWA’s designated partner offices worldwide.
