OWWA, PhilHealth move to expand Alagang OWWA health coverage for OFWs’ families

Health support for overseas Filipino workers is set to widen as Overseas Workers Welfare Administration and PhilHealth formalized discussions aimed at strengthening medical benefits under the Alagang OWWA health programs. The talks focused on building more comprehensive health packages that would better address the needs of OFWs and extend assistance more effectively to their families in the Philippines.

A major component of the expanded effort involves scaling up access to free healthcare services through additional Yakap at Gamot Botika and Centers, which are planned for rollout across OWWA regional offices nationwide. The expansion is being carried out in coordination with PhilHealth and healthcare partner VidaCure, with the goal of making consultations, diagnostics, and medicines more accessible to members outside major urban centers.

Officials said the enhanced package includes an upgraded MEDplus benefit for members who maintain active status with both OWWA and PhilHealth. The strengthened MEDplus coverage is intended to provide added financial relief during hospitalization, particularly for serious medical conditions that place a heavy burden on families.

Under the expanded Yakap at Gamot services, qualified beneficiaries may access free medical consultations, selected laboratory tests, and prescribed medicines. Coverage is structured to include not only OFWs but also their children and declared dependents, allowing families to receive care locally even while the worker remains employed overseas.

The program framework also recognizes the reality of long-distance caregiving, with assistance mechanisms designed to support families on the ground regardless of the OFW’s physical location. According to OWWA, this approach ensures continuity of care and reduces delays in seeking treatment caused by financial or logistical constraints.

OWWA added that additional health-related initiatives under the Alagang OWWA banner are in various stages of development and will be introduced in the coming periods as part of its broader effort to strengthen member welfare services.
