Dubai authorities have impounded more than 220 private cars used for illegal passenger transport, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Tuesday. The operation was part of a crackdown on unauthorized transport services in the emirate, Khaleej Times reports.
A significant portion of these seizures occurred around Dubai Airports (DXB), where 90 cars were impounded following inspections by the RTA and the General Department of Airport Security. Terminals 1, 2, and 3 were the primary focus areas for these operations.
In addition to the airport seizures, authorities took measures that led to the impounding of 86 illegal vehicles in Hatta and 49 around the Jebel Ali area.
Saeed Al Balooshi, Director of Passenger Transport Activities Monitoring at RTA’s Public Transport Agency, emphasized the importance of these actions. “In coordination with the Dubai Police General HQ, we conducted inspections of unlicensed passenger transport in several parts of the emirate, especially spots known for such illegal activities. We issued violations for passenger transport on unlicensed vehicles and promoting these services,” he said.
Individuals caught illegally transporting passengers can face fines up to Dh30,000, while companies can be fined up to Dh50,000, in accordance with the Executive Council Resolution No. (20) of 2021, which amends Executive Council Resolution No. (6) of 2016 that regulates passenger transport by cars in Dubai.
