More than 120 Filipino scientists have returned to the Philippines as part of the Balik Scientist Program of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), an initiative designed to enhance the country’s scientific and technological landscape.
Science Secretary Renato Solidum shared in a GMA News report that some of these returning experts have chosen to settle in the country for good. The program offers flexible participation periods, ranging from short-term stays of 15 days to extended engagements lasting up to three years.
According to Solidum, those who decide to remain receive government assistance, including grants for setting up laboratories and funding research projects that contribute to national development.
To sustain the country’s scientific talent pool, DOST continues to support aspiring scientists. Currently, around 10,000 students are enrolled in the Philippine Science High School, nearly 50,000 are pursuing STEM-related college degrees, and approximately 5,000 are engaged in postgraduate studies.
Solidum underscored the need to create a thriving environment for research and innovation, ensuring that homegrown scientists can contribute to the country’s progress.
