Over 1,000 drivers caught fleeing from UAE traffic cops in 2024

More than 1,000 motorists across the UAE attempted to flee from traffic police in 2024, according to alarming new figures released by the Ministry of Interior.

A total of 1,023 fleeing incidents were recorded nationwide, with Sharjah logging the highest number at 315, followed by Dubai with 241, and Abu Dhabi with 234. Ajman (113), Ras Al Khaimah (83), Umm Al Quwain (21), and Fujairah (16) also reported similar violations.

The data, reported by Gulf News, highlighted a concerning rise in driver behavior that undermines public safety and the authority of law enforcement. In many of these cases, drivers either sped away after being stopped or refused to comply with basic instructions.

“When a driver disrespects or disobeys a traffic officer, it’s not just a matter of road safety—it’s a matter of public order and respect for law enforcement,” a senior police official told Gulf News.

The Ministry also recorded 11,254 violations involving drivers ignoring police instructions. Dubai topped the list with 4,729 cases, followed by Abu Dhabi (3,722), Sharjah (1,546), Ajman (451), Ras Al Khaimah (284), Fujairah (308), and Umm Al Quwain (214).

The official explained that officers are trained to manage such situations calmly and are mindful of cultural differences that may cause drivers to panic. “Drivers are not allowed to leave their vehicles, and officers are trained to avoid escalating tensions,” he said. “We also take into account the diverse cultural backgrounds of drivers, as many people become nervous simply at the thought of receiving a fine.”

Drivers caught fleeing face an AED 800 fine, 12 black points on their license, and a 30-day vehicle impoundment. Disobeying police orders carries a AED 400 fine and four black points, while refusal to give one’s name or address to authorities can result in a AED 500 fine.

Authorities clarified that fleeing violations are only valid if the officer is in uniform, on duty, and inside an official patrol vehicle.
