Veteran singer and OPM trailblazer Hajji Alejandro has passed away, his family confirmed in a statement released on Tuesday.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Dad and Son, Angelito ‘Hajji’ T. Alejandro,” the statement read. “At this time, we kindly ask for privacy as our family grieves this tremendous loss. We appreciate your understanding and support during this difficult time. To God be the glory.”
Alejandro, whose real name was Angelito, rose to fame in the 1970s and was known as the original Kilabot ng mga Kolehiyala—a moniker earned after his wildly successful campus concert tours. His iconic hit “Kay Ganda ng Ating Musika,” composed by Ryan Cayabyab, became an anthem celebrating Filipino artistry. It not only won the 1978 Metropop but also clinched the Grand Prix at the Seoul Song Festival in South Korea, where Alejandro also took home Best Singer honors.
The singer had been battling stage 4 colon cancer that had spread to his lungs and liver. He last celebrated his 70th birthday in December 2023, surrounded by loved ones.
