Nesthy Petecio, who recently secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics, will be promoted to a higher rank upon her return to the Philippines, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). Petecio, who currently serves as Petty Officer Second Class under the PCG’s Special Service Office, will be elevated to the next rank as recognition for her outstanding achievement.
“Nesthy won a bronze medal in recognition of her feat, which is a very inspiring achievement. The Philippine Coast Guard will be promoting her to the next rank when she comes back,” stated PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan.
Petecio’s journey in Paris concluded with a controversial semifinal match against Polish boxer Julia Szeremeta, where she narrowly missed advancing to the finals. Despite her disappointment, Petecio made history by becoming the first Filipino boxer to win medals in back-to-back Olympics, adding this bronze to her silver from Tokyo 2021.
In addition to Petecio, the PCG is also supporting Coast Guard Seawoman Second Class Elreen Ando, who is competing in the women’s 59-kg weightlifting category at the Paris Olympics.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. lauded Petecio’s resilience and dedication, expressing his pride in her accomplishments. “Congratulations, Nesthy! Thank you for bringing home the bronze medal for the Philippines. You’ve truly shown the world how Filipinos never back down from a challenge,” the President posted on social media.
Senators have also expressed their admiration for Petecio’s achievements, with Senate President Pro-Tempore Jinggoy Estrada proposing the Senate Medal of Excellence to honor her relentless pursuit of excellence in the sport.
As the nation celebrates Petecio’s success, she remains open to future Olympic endeavors, stating, “Let’s see. I can’t say for sure right now, but as long as I can still fight for the country, why not continue?”
