Olympic gymnast Carlos Edriel Yulo has officially joined the ranks of the Philippine Navy Reserve Force. The two-time Olympic gold medalist took his oath at the Navy Headquarters on Monday, marking a significant chapter in his career beyond sports.
Yulo, who made history at the 2024 Paris Olympics by winning gold medals in both the floor exercise and vault events, expressed his gratitude for the honor. “I am proud to have the privilege of being enlisted in the Philippine Navy Reserve Force, a recognition I never expected in my lifetime,” Yulo said. He also shared how wearing the Navy uniform brings him “immense pride” and committed to upholding the Navy’s values while inspiring the youth through sports.
Yulo now holds the rank of Petty Officer 1st Class, according to the Naval Public Affairs Office. His enlistment places him among a select group of Olympic athletes who have chosen to serve the country, including Tokyo Games gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz, Tokyo Games bronze medalist Eumir Marcial, and two-time medalist Nesthy Petecio.
In a message delivered by MGen. Joseph Ferrous Cuison, Philippine Navy Flag Officer In Command Vice Adm. Toribio Adaci Jr. praised Yulo’s dedication and discipline. “Your dedication, discipline, and drive made you a champion on the world stage, and now, you bring those same qualities to the Philippine Navy,” said Adaci. He added that Yulo’s commitment to the Navy would be as unwavering as it has been in his sporting career.
