OFWs told to report threats from agencies, not post on social media

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) in Region 12 is calling on overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to formally report abusive recruitment agencies, assuring them of full support and protection throughout the process.

DMW Regional Director Samsudin Lintongan encouraged OFWs to document threats and harassment by taking screenshots and gathering solid proof. “Kung may banta sa inyo, i-screenshot lang. Ipunin. I-submit sa amin pag nag-lodge ng complaint,” he told returning OFWs, reminding them that complaints are more effectively handled through formal channels rather than social media.

In a PIA report, Lintongan highlighted a recent case involving a returning OFW from South Cotabato who accused her agency of opening her luggage and taking her money intended for her flight home. “Mali ‘yan. Pag nagreklamo ang OFW, papanagutin natin ang agency. Hindi pwedeng binu-bully ang mga kababayan natin,” he said.

He also emphasized the government’s broader commitment to OFWs, noting that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has been dubbed the “OFW president” for his dedication to migrant workers’ welfare. “Ang malasakit niya sa ating mga OFW ay totoo at malaki,” Lintongan said, echoing the words of DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac.

While advocating for safer employment practices abroad, Lintongan reminded aspiring OFWs that working overseas should be a choice, not a last resort. “Hindi dapat ito maging bread and butter. Mahirap talaga ang malayo sa pamilya,” he noted.

Despite being a relatively new office, DMW Region 12 is expanding its reach and programs, including livelihood assistance and reintegration support like the Balik Pinay Balik Hanapbuhay and Sa Pinas, Ikaw ang Ma’am/Sir initiatives.

“Our mandate is to protect OFWs and their families,” Lintongan stressed. “Bukas po ang aming opisina sa lahat ng nangangailangan ng tulong.”
