Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) will not be affected by the scheduled increase in terminal fees at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) starting next month, the airport’s operator clarified on Wednesday.
“We recognize the sacrifice and contribution of our modern-day heroes. Their exemption from terminal fees continues under the new framework,” the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) said in a statement, countering concerns raised online.
Beginning September, the passenger service charge (PSC) for international flights will rise from PHP550 to PHP950, while domestic flights will increase from PHP200 to PHP390. This marks the first adjustment in more than two decades, which the operator said is necessary to sustain ongoing airport improvements.
“Collections go directly to airport operations and passenger service improvements,” the NNIC explained, noting that the new rates remain below inflation-adjusted levels since 2000. The adjustments were set under Manila International Airport Authority Administrative Order No. 1, Series of 2024, and approved by the Department of Transportation and the Cabinet, with review from the Asian Development Bank.
Since assuming management of NAIA in September 2024, the San Miguel-led consortium said it has undertaken a series of upgrades including renovated restrooms, new air-conditioning units, restored escalators and elevators, additional gang chairs and trolleys, improved Wi-Fi, enhanced CCTV systems, and wider curbside lanes.
Other enhancements include a centralized TNVS hub, an OFW lounge with rest areas, automated parking, new shuttle buses and ambulances, and employee facilities. A biometric passenger processing system is also expected to roll out next month.
