An overseas Filipino worker is capturing the attention of the Middle East with his Pinoy Museum on Wheels (PMOW). This unique initiative, launched on August 23, 2018, travels across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, offering free exhibitions of Philippine memorabilia, including vintage banknotes, coins, postal stamps, and other cultural artifacts.
Reflecting on the museum’s inception, Brian “Ibrahim” Asinas Mendoza said in a PNA report, “I came up with the idea to do a museum that travels to different places, same as the embassy.” This concept blossomed from his experiences in community service and was fueled by the Embassy on Wheels, which provided government services to Filipino communities in Saudi Arabia.
PMOW’s journey began as a one-day exhibit but soon evolved into a mobile museum, drawing support from Philippine culture and arts advocates and the Philippine Embassy in Saudi Arabia. The museum has notably hosted exhibitions in schools, hotels, malls, and during events organized by Filipino communities. Mendoza’s initiative also marked a milestone as the first Filipino exhibit in the Cultural Palace of Saudi Arabia, broadening its impact beyond Saudi borders.
Funded entirely by Mendoza, the PMOW thrives on his personal investment and the support of volunteers and donors. Mendoza shared, “Since the PMOW is my advocacy, all expenses, fees, and maintenance costs come from my own pocket.” He also expressed gratitude for the collectible items donated to enrich the museum’s collection.
The heart of the museum lies in its collection, a testament to Mendoza’s lifelong passion for collecting, which began with unique stones from his hometown in Oriental Mindoro. Over the years, his collection has expanded to include an array of Philippine treasures, from guerrilla notes of World War II to everyday items that evoke nostalgia among visitors.
Despite challenges, like maintaining the delicate condition of the artifacts and managing the behavior of visitors, Mendoza’s dedication remains unwavering. He meticulously cares for each item, ensuring their preservation in the harsh Saudi climate.
Mendoza’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. He has been honored with several awards, recognizing his exceptional contribution to promoting Filipino history, culture, and arts.
