OFWs from Iloilo get domestic flight discounts under new PAL, OWWA program

Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) departing from Iloilo can now avail themselves of discounted domestic flights, thanks to a new pilot program launched by Philippine Airlines (PAL) in collaboration with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Region 6.

During a press conference held on May 10, PAL announced that OFWs can enjoy discounts of up to 10 percent on unlimited domestic trips until July 31. Leonard Bryan Sansolis, PAL’s regional head for sales in the Philippines, emphasized in a Daily Guardian report the significance of the initiative, stating, “This initiative is being piloted in Iloilo because we recognize this is one of the regions with a large OFW population.” He described the program as “a labor of passion,” aimed at acknowledging the hard work and sacrifices of Filipino workers abroad.

The program offers various discounts depending on the class of ticket purchased. Economy Saver tickets come with a 5 percent discount and a 10 kg baggage allowance. Economy Value and Economy Flex tickets include a 10 percent discount and a 20 kg baggage allowance. Meanwhile, Comfort Class and Business Class passengers receive a 10 percent discount, with 25 kg and 35 kg baggage allowances, respectively.

To avail of the discount, OFWs must present a valid Overseas Employment Certificate, Certificate of Employment, or Seaman’s Book. Tickets are available only through PAL’s Iloilo ticket office and authorized travel agencies in the city and province. The discount cannot be combined with other statutory discounts, such as those for senior citizens, students, or persons with disabilities.

James Mendiola, OWWA Region 6 officer in charge, praised the program’s potential impact, highlighting the estimated 400,000 OFWs in Western Visayas. “This meaningful undertaking is a powerful step toward honoring their sacrifices by making air travel more accessible,” he said.

Iloilo, known for having the highest number of OWWA-registered OFWs in the region, recorded 30,019 departures and 26,018 arrivals in 2024. PAL will assess the program’s success before considering its expansion to other regions.
