Overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) can participate in protests abroad as long as they comply with the laws of their host countries, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Cacdac reminded on Thursday.
Cacdac emphasized in a PhilStar Global report that the DMW is closely monitoring rallies involving OFWs while ensuring their welfare remains a priority. “The DMW will always safeguard the rights of our OFWs and work alongside other agencies to provide essential programs and services,” he stated.
His reminder comes as Migrante International, an OFW rights group, urges Filipinos overseas to join demonstrations calling for the conviction of former president Rodrigo Duterte for alleged crimes against humanity.
Meanwhile, House Minority Leader Marcelino Libanan defended the Philippine government’s decision to cooperate with the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) in serving an arrest warrant against Duterte.
“By working with Interpol, the Philippines reaffirms its commitment to the rule of law, international legal standards, and the pursuit of justice,” Libanan said.
