A Filipina Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) was unable to board her flight to Doha, Qatar, after her husband violently destroyed her passport and travel documents at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). The OFW, Myren Onato, was left in tears following the altercation with her husband, Jonard Banate, in the departure area on Wednesday.
According to a Manila Bulletin report, the incident occurred when Banate, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, called Onato for a farewell hug before her departure. The situation quickly escalated, leading to a heated argument, during which Banate tore Onato’s passport, boarding pass, and even damaged her cellphone.
Onato, who has been the sole breadwinner for seven years, expressed her distress and frustration over the incident. She recounted her struggles, including working abroad while pregnant, to support Banate, who has been unemployed during this period. The OFW also revealed a history of physical abuse by Banate, often triggered by his jealousy and alcohol consumption.
The authorities at NAIA intervened only after Banate had destroyed the travel documents. Onato plans to take legal action against her husband, citing violation of Republic Act No. 9262, or the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act of 2004, and for destroying a public document.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Department of Foreign Affairs has pledged to assist Onato in obtaining a new passport. However, the process is expected to take several days. The Bureau of Immigration also stated that they could not permit Onato to travel with damaged documents, as they would not be recognized by Qatar.
