OFW seafarers in Guatemala show solidarity with anti-corruption protests in the Philippines

Even thousands of miles away, Filipino seafarers in Guatemala found a way to make their voices heard as massive anti-corruption demonstrations swept the Philippines on Sunday, September 21.

The overseas workers expressed their frustration by placing a makeshift “dummy” figure on board their ship, boldly carrying the words “SAVE THE PHILIPPINES.”

According to R. Sandoval, the act was their symbolic protest against the rampant corruption back home, particularly the controversies surrounding flood control projects that have triggered nationwide outrage.

Tens of thousands of Filipinos marched in Manila’s Luneta Park and along EDSA to demand accountability for alleged “ghost projects” and anomalies in infrastructure spending. Similar demonstrations were also staged across the country, with students, faith-based groups, and flood victims calling for justice.
