Margarita Portillo, fondly known as Margie, is a remarkable woman whose story resonates with many Filipinos abroad. Her journey from a struggling single mother in the Philippines to a successful Executive Secretary in the heart of Dubai is an inspiring tale of determination, sacrifice, and unwavering love for her family.
Born the youngest in her family, Margie graduated of Bachelor of Science major in Management in Centro Escolar University Manila, and she dreamt of a career in management. However, life had other plans for her. After becoming a single mother at a young age, Margie faced numerous challenges while striving to provide for her two children. Her journey began in the Philippines, where she held various jobs, from being a telephone operator, HR Assistant, to working in recruitment agencies.
With a deep desire to secure a better future for her children, Margie made the brave decision to work abroad. In 2007, she embarked on her overseas journey, starting as a call center customer service representative in Abu Dhabi. Her career progressed steadily, and she transitioned into the role of executive secretary to the general manager in a facilities management company.
In 2010, Margie moved to Dubai and joined Alpha Tours Tourism Company as an executive secretary. This position would shape her career for the next nine years, and she became an invaluable asset to her boss. Despite the challenges that came her way, Margie’s commitment, loyalty, and organizational skills shone through. Her ability to anticipate her boss’s needs, manage urgent situations, and maintain impeccable professionalism made her an exceptional executive secretary.
When Alpha Tours faced a difficult period and had to downsize its workforce, Margie found herself unemployed for a brief period. However, her perseverance paid off when she received an offer to work as an executive secretary for the CEO and COO of Eden Global Investments Limited at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). Margie’s dedication and excellence were once again recognized, and she quickly became an essential part of the company, playing a pivotal role in their success.
Reflecting on her work, Margie shared, “Being an Executive Secretary is not easy. It requires me to be available at all times, even during weekends and late at night. However, the most satisfying thing about my work is when my boss appreciates my hard work, loyalty, and determination.”
Working overseas has brought Margie numerous benefits, including exposure to diverse cultures, the opportunity to make new friends from different nationalities, and the chance to develop her communication skills. Her experience has not only strengthened her professional capabilities but also broadened her horizons.
Throughout her journey, Margie faced various struggles. From battling a toxic relationship to enduring anxiety disorder, financial difficulties, and the pain of being away from her children, she never lost faith. Her unwavering resilience, coupled with the support of her family and her unyielding trust in God, helped her overcome these challenges.
Looking ahead, Margie dreams of settling down in her own house in the Philippines and starting a small business. She plans to empower her children, who are now with her in Dubai, to pursue their careers and build a bright future for themselves.
The seasoned Filipina executive secretary offers advice to fellow kabayans facing their own struggles abroad: “Stay focused on your purpose, be patient, work hard, believe in yourself, stay positive, and never forget to pray for guidance and strength. In every choice, there is an exchange, and it is important to weigh the heart and mind. Trust in the Lord, and He will always be there for you.”
