OFW film on toxic family ties moves Bahrain audience at Dana Mall

The Filipino community in Bahrain gathered in full force at Dana Mall’s Epix Cinemas for the debut of How to Get Away from My Toxic Family, a film that struck a deep emotional chord with Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

Starring Zanjoe Marudo and produced by Ogie Diaz, the movie delves into the painful reality of coming home only to face toxic family dynamics. For many OFWs in the audience, the story mirrored personal struggles and sacrifices, turning the screening into a night of reflection and solidarity.

The event was made possible through the partnership of Medici Events, led by Yvonne Villamor and Dr. Lacopo Sbraci, and Magis5 Events, composed of Ric Advincula, Walter Borja, Jeune Catindig, Jobelle De Guia, and Czerina Martin. Their efforts ensured the film reached its intended audience while fostering conversations on family, sacrifice, and self-worth.

With limited seats and overwhelming demand, the night became more than just entertainment — it was a shared space for healing and empowerment. Support from local sponsors, including Technochem Trading, ALSE OF-LIFE Bahrain, Bahay Kubo, Evershine Jewellery, Casa Lasa, Darseen Café, Erwin Ereno Design and Co., and Pinay Ikaw Na!, helped bring the experience to life.

As the credits rolled, many walked away not only entertained but carrying the film’s hard-hitting reminder: sometimes, choosing peace means learning to walk away — even from the people closest to us.

Magis5 and Medici Events say this is just the beginning, with more community-centered and meaningful projects already in the works.
