Dubai, a city renowned for its gleaming skyscrapers and sprawling deserts, has become a melting pot of world cultures.
Amidst this rich tapestry, Oragon Kitchen emerges, painting a vivid picture of Filipino traditions and flavors. Founded by Zeus Immanuelle Medenilla, this culinary haven is not just a business but a heartfelt tribute to the Bicol Region of the Philippines.
Zeus’s story is not unique among OFWs, but his resilience, ingenuity, and passion shine through every challenge. From his early days in Dubai as a debt collection specialist to his entrepreneurial journey with Oragon Kitchen, Zeus has always brought with him a piece of home.
“I started my OFW journey back in 2015,” Zeus begins, recalling the demands of his job, the variety of challenges, and the unique opportunity to assist people with their financial difficulties. But like many, Zeus faced unexpected hurdles.
“The pandemic came in 2020, and I was out of work for over 9 months,” he adds.
Pursuing passions amidst adversity
After almost a year, Zeus found employment again, this time learning the ropes of B2B businesses. But destiny had a different plan.
“In October 2022, I ventured out in Global Village, setting up a small dessert shop called Mahalao Halo,” he told The Global Filipino Magazine.
This move was not just a business endeavor but a realization.
“Filipino desserts are easily embraced by other UAE locals and expats,” he shares.
Sensing the market’s acceptance and the seasonal nature of his Global Village venture, Zeus took the plunge and launched Oragon Kitchen in May 2023.
Through it, he seeks to share the rich heritage and flavors of his hometown, Naga City.
Drawing inspiration from the past
With parents who had dabbled in various businesses, from bakeries to computer shops, Zeus had an inherent entrepreneurial spirit.
“One good thing I have learned from them is not to be afraid of taking risks in starting a business,” he shares.
His advice to others echoes his life mantra, quoted from Frederick B. Wilcox: “Progress always involves risks. You can’t steal second base and keep your foot on first base.”
“I enjoy showcasing the Bicolano culture through food,” Zeus confesses, his voice filled with pride.
Every dish at Oragon Kitchen tells a story, and Zeus ensures that his customers know and appreciate it.
While the journey has been rewarding, it wasn’t without its challenges.
“Most of the challenges point to the question ‘Where should I start’,” Zeus shares. But with his wife by his side and their shared dreams, they’ve overcome every hurdle.
To those struggling abroad, Zeus offers sage advice: “Regardless of your current situation, do not forget to pray and be thankful. That should be the start.”
Looking ahead, Zeus dreams of expanding Oragon Kitchen back in Manila and Naga City. There’s also the exciting prospect of offering a dine-in experience, with plans in the works to find a venue for customers.
