Katrina Irene II, a 47-year-old creative powerhouse, shares her remarkable journey from a hopeful model in Bulacan to making a significant mark in Dubai’s fashion and IT industry.
Born and raised in the province of Bulacan, Katrina’s early life revolved around family and academics. A degree holder in Computer Science from AMA University, her career trajectory saw a dynamic shift from working in her family’s rice mill business to becoming a pivotal figure in the UAE’s creative scene.
“I arrived in the UAE in September 2011,” she recounts, initially landing a part-time job as a data encoder.
But it was her determination and skill as an IT Analyst at ARENCO Enterprises that highlighted her first few years abroad.
“My work required me to analyze systems, identify areas for improvement, and propose solutions to enhance productivity,” Katrina explains with The Global Filipino Magazine, reflecting on her 8-year tenure with the company before she lost her job during the pandemic.
However, it wasn’t just her acumen in IT that defined Katrina’s time in Dubai.
“When I was young, my real ambition was to be a model,” she confides.
Despite the setbacks she faced in the Philippines due to conventional beauty standards, Katrina’s dream found wings in Dubai.
“I got noticed by photographers during a fashion show, and everything is history,” she beams.
Her journey in the modeling world reached a pinnacle with her image emblazoned on a billboard in Oasis Mall in February 2021.
Merging passion and profession
Currently, as a Freelance Creative Head and Stage Director for fashion shows and pageants, Katrina is a force to be reckoned with in the events industry.
“From a young age, I have always been captivated by the creativity, glamour, and excitement that these events encompass,” she shares passionately.
The transition from IT to the creative realm might seem drastic, but for Katrina, it was a natural progression.
“I find great joy in the meticulous planning, the ability to create unforgettable moments, and seeing how these industries can empower individuals and celebrate diversity,” she elaborates.
Her role now involves everything from planning auditions to supervising entire creative plans for shows, a responsibility she finds deeply satisfying.
The decision to work abroad was fueled by a desire for personal growth and better opportunities, a common thread among many overseas Filipino workers.
“Working abroad offers numerous advantages and opportunities for personal and professional growth,” Katrina asserts.
The experience has allowed her to immerse herself in a different culture, expand her skill set, and establish a global network of connections.
Yet, the path wasn’t devoid of struggles.
“As an IT Computer Analyst, keeping up with the latest advancements and trends was a significant challenge,” she admits. But it’s her resilience and positive outlook that have seen her through.
“I always think that whatever happens has a reason behind it. And I know that God has another plan for me,” she reflects.
Looking toward the future, Katrina envisions a thriving business back home.
“I want to have a stable income, so my family won’t have to go overseas,” she shares, emphasizing the difficulty of being away from loved ones.
To fellow Filipinos striving abroad, Katrina offers heartfelt advice: “Everyone’s experience abroad is unique, and it’s normal to face challenges. Adopt a positive mindset, seek support, and take care of yourself. Never give up on your dreams. It will really happen in God’s perfect timing.”
Her mantra, “Be kind to yourself and others,” echoes through her achievements and the paths she has paved, not just for herself, but for those who dare to dream beyond borders and stereotypes.
