Nueva Vizcaya officially named the Philippines’ ginger capital

Nueva Vizcaya has earned its place as the country’s official “Ginger Capital,” following a declaration from the Department of Agriculture (DA) recognizing the province’s dominance in ginger production.

According to the DA, the province produced a total of 7,140 metric tons of ginger in 2024, cultivated from 933 hectares of farmland. With over 5,000 farmers engaged in ginger cultivation, the region also supplied 14,753 metric tons of the spice to trading centers across northern and southern Luzon and Metro Manila.

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. emphasized that the recognition goes beyond prestige. “This recognition is not just a title—it’s a commitment to deliver support where it truly matters,” he said.

He underscored the economic and health value of ginger, citing its culinary and medicinal uses. “With proper backing from the DA, it can significantly improve product value addition to uplift the incomes of smallholder farmers in Nueva Vizcaya and across Cagayan Valley,” he added.

Aside from ginger, Nueva Vizcaya’s vast agricultural land also yields other vital crops such as rice, corn, onion, garlic, tomatoes, melon, and mango—further solidifying its status as a key contributor to the country’s food security.
