No leadership shake-up: Garbin affirms Romualdez’s hold on House speakership

House Speaker Martin Romualdez continues to enjoy the strong backing of the supermajority in the 20th Congress, according to Ako Bicol party-list Representative-elect Alfredo Garbin Jr.

Garbin confirmed on Monday that major political parties are standing behind Romualdez, dismissing speculations of a leadership shake-up. “Wala naman question eh. The major political parties support Speaker Martin Romualdez,” Garbin said in an ABS-CBN News report.

Garbin, who represented the party-list bloc during a recent meeting of political party leaders in Makati City, emphasized that the gathering was not a “loyalty check” but rather a “meet and greet” following the 2025 elections. Discussions primarily focused on room assignments, committee allocations, and other organizational matters, he explained.

“As to the Speakership, doon sa party leaders’ meeting settled naman at si Speaker Martin Romualdez pa rin,” Garbin added.

Meanwhile, House Deputy Speaker David “Jay-Jay” Suarez of Lakas-CMD announced that at least 240 lawmakers have signed a manifesto expressing continued support for Romualdez’s leadership. The endorsement came from lawmakers representing major blocs, including Lakas-CMD, National Unity Party (NUP), Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), Nacionalista Party (NP), Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), and the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. (PCFI).

Suarez further clarified that there are no other known contenders for the speakership position in the 20th Congress.
