Veteran actor Niño Muhlach broke down in tears on Wednesday, August 8, while discussing the ordeal of his son, showbiz newcomer Sandro Muhlach, during the Senate Committee on Public Information and Mass Media’s investigation into allegations of sexual abuse.
Sandro has filed a complaint against independent contractors Richard Cruz and Jojo Nones of GMA Network. Both respondents were issued subpoenas by the Senate panel after expressing regret for not attending the hearing.
Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada expressed the committee’s wish for Sandro to testify, but his lawyer stated that the young actor is still traumatized. National Bureau of Investigation Chief for Anti-Graft Division Marie Catherine Nolasco-Illescas noted that a behavioral science evaluation recommended that Sandro limit his public exposure.
Representatives from various media companies assured the committee that mechanisms are in place to protect workers against sexual abuse. Cherry Cruz of ABS-CBN Legal emphasized the company’s strict policies against harassment. IBC 13 president and CEO Jimmy Policarpio and Viva Artists Agency’s Catriona Maniego also affirmed their commitment to safeguarding their employees and artists.
The Senate panel announced plans to hold an executive session to discuss the details of Sandro’s complaint against Cruz and Nones. Committee chair Sen. Robinhood Padilla confirmed the session, highlighting the importance of considering the mental health of the complainant and the rights of the accused.
