A devastating fire that engulfed a residential building in Sharjah’s Al Nahda area on Thursday night claimed the lives of five individuals, including two Indians, as confirmed by family friends and social workers to Khaleej Times.
Among the victims was Michael Sathyadass, an employee of DXB Live at Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC). Describing Michael’s contributions, his brother Danny Sathyadass shared, “[He] chose to be backstage and behind the scenes, literally and figuratively, to ensure that others shine and sound better.”
Michael’s brother revealed that Michael, a sound engineer, had contributed to concerts featuring renowned artists such as Bruno Mars and AR Rahman throughout his career. DWTC, in an email to its employees, praised Michael’s “exceptional dedication and loyalty” and highlighted his significant contributions since joining the organization in November 2022.
The second Indian victim was a 29-year-old woman from Mumbai, whose identity is being withheld until confirmed by authorities and family. Her husband remains in critical condition in the hospital. A friend of the woman revealed, “Right now, doctors have said that his condition is very critical.”
The tragic incident also claimed the life of a Filipina expat, leaving her husband in intensive care. The fire, which engulfed the 9-storey tower with 750 apartments, left 44 injured and several displaced.
According to the deceased woman’s friend, the couple, who were newlyweds, had married in February and recently moved into the building where the fire occurred. Family members of the victims have arrived in the UAE, awaiting completion of formalities.
The Consulate General of India assured that they are providing all necessary support to the families of the deceased and those receiving treatment. Social worker Ashraf Thamarassery stated that the young lady is expected to be buried in the UAE after the formalities are completed.
