A baby boy who was delivered mid-flight on a Jeju Air plane en route from the Philippines to South Korea has died, according to the Incheon International Airport Police Corps.
Authorities received an emergency call at around 6:44 a.m. on Sunday reporting that the newborn, delivered on board the flight from Clark International Airport to Incheon, was not breathing. By the time emergency responders arrived, the infant had gone into cardiac arrest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later declared dead.
The baby’s mother, a Filipino woman in her 30s, had been traveling with her husband, daughter, and mother-in-law, all Philippine nationals. The flight had been scheduled to land at Incheon at approximately 6:21 a.m.
Incheon airport police said they are looking into the circumstances surrounding the boy’s birth and subsequent death. As the incident occurred aboard a Korean-registered aircraft, South Korean authorities retain jurisdiction under international flag state laws.
Investigations are ongoing.
