New year, new vision: Filipino in Dubai creates lens brand after being laid off

Taking a leap of faith often defines the lives of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs), and for Jake Raffy Cabug, this leap has led him to a new chapter—entrepreneurship. After years of hard work in Dubai, Jake is now poised to launch Coolay, a proudly Filipino-owned contact lens brand, in January 2025. His journey highlights the power of resilience and determination in turning challenges into opportunities.

Jake’s story began like many OFWs: a pursuit of better opportunities abroad. For over five years, he thrived as a Trade Marketing Manager, working for one of the UAE’s largest companies. But in February 2024, corporate restructuring led to his unexpected layoff. Instead of allowing the setback to derail his plans, he used it as a springboard to chase his entrepreneurial dream.

“Getting laid off was a life-changing moment,” Jake reflects. “It gave me the push to pursue my passion and create a brand that brings vibrant, high-quality lenses to customers while adding a touch of color—or Coolay—to their lives.”

The name Coolay—a blend of “cool” and the Tagalog word “kulay,” meaning color—reflects Jake’s vision of self-expression and individuality. Inspired by the UAE’s multicultural vibrancy, the brand aims to empower users to embrace their unique identities.

“Coolay is not just about beauty,” Jake explains. “It’s about resilience, self-expression, and embracing the colorful journey of life.”

Set to launch in the third week of January 2025, Coolay represents more than a product; it’s a celebration of Filipino ingenuity on a global stage.

“I want Coolay to inspire others to start the year with hope and excitement.”
