Abu Dhabi is set to unveil a unified water management strategy that will encompass all stages from production to consumption, according to Eng. Awaidha Murshed Al Marar, Chairman of the Department of Energy. The strategy aims to optimize water usage by studying water losses, promoting efficient consumption, and adding value through better management.
Speaking at the World Utilities Congress 2024, Eng. Awaidha highlighted the department’s ongoing efforts to introduce policies that ensure the sustainability of the water and electricity sectors. These initiatives aim to reduce environmental impact and service costs, aligning with the UAE’s climate neutrality goals.
The demand for water and electricity in Abu Dhabi has seen steady growth, with the agriculture and housing sectors being the largest consumers of water. Currently, groundwater provides 56% of the water supply, while desalination contributes 33%, and the remainder comes from recycled and rainwater sources.
