New UAE rule lets federal employees attend kids’ first day of school

The Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) has announced a new circular giving parents working in federal ministries and entities added flexibility during the start of the academic year.

The directive allows parents employed in the federal government to accompany their children on the first day of school or nursery without compromising official duties. Employees may be permitted up to three hours—taken either in the morning or afternoon—to drop off or pick up their children.

For parents with children in nurseries or kindergartens, the flexibility extends through the first school week, considering that start dates may vary depending on the curriculum. They may also be allowed up to three hours daily for school drop-off and pick-up arrangements.

The policy also applies throughout the academic year on special occasions. Employees may be excused for up to three hours to attend parent-teacher meetings, graduation ceremonies, or other important school activities involving their children.

FAHR emphasized that while the initiative supports parents, it must be carried out with the approval of a direct manager and without disrupting workflow or services.
