Dubai Central Laboratory, a part of Dubai Municipality, has taken a significant step forward in public health safety by incorporating a new artificial intelligence (AI) technology for detecting Legionella, a bacteria responsible for severe respiratory infections. This innovative method is accredited by the European Water Testing Network and recognized by AOAC International.
Engineer Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, Director of the Dubai Central Laboratory Department, expressed enthusiasm about the advancements, stating in a Khaleej Times report, “This revolutionary method of detecting the Legionella pulmonary bacteria is among the latest to be accredited globally. The technology is very accurate and quick to produce results, typically needing 48 hours as opposed to the 14 days required by traditional methods.”
Ahmed highlighted the Dubai Municipality’s dedication to enhancing the digital infrastructure of its laboratories. “Our commitment to equipping our labs with cutting-edge systems aims to improve the Emirate’s health and safety system significantly,” Ahmed added.
The Dubai Central Laboratory performs over 100,000 tests annually through its microbiological analysis laboratories on various food types, environmental water, and consumer products to ensure the safety of goods in the Dubai markets. These tests benefit multiple sectors including food, health, industry, and the environment, alongside governmental and academic entities.
The implementation of nearly 5,000 technology systems and devices underscores the laboratory’s role in safeguarding public health through advanced technological integration.
