New AI camera system on Dubai waste vehicles targets AED 500 littering penalties

Dubai Municipality has started testing an artificial intelligence–driven camera system designed to strengthen how cleanliness issues and waste-related violations are detected across the city, placing smart monitoring directly onto waste collection operations.

Under the pilot phase of the Smart Waste Management framework, cameras equipped with AI and real-time analytics have been mounted on selected waste collection and transport vehicles. Rather than relying solely on fixed monitoring points, the system allows moving units to observe conditions along roads, residential districts, and public spaces as part of their daily routes.

The technology is configured to flag activities that undermine public cleanliness, including littering in open areas, the dumping of bulky items such as furniture, and other forms of improper waste disposal near containers, sidewalks, and shared public areas. Littering violations remain punishable by fines of up to AED 500.

Images captured by the cameras are processed instantly and transmitted to digital dashboards used by inspection teams, enabling faster verification and response once a violation is detected. Authorities say this reduces delays between observation and corrective action.

Dubai Municipality Director-General Engineer Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita described the initiative as part of a broader effort to modernize oversight tools, strengthen evidence-based decisions, and support long-term environmental planning. He said results from the pilot phase will be reviewed before any decision is made to expand the system.

According to Engineer Adel Al Marzouqi, Executive Director of the Waste and Sewerage Agency, the platform improves the accuracy of documenting violations while shortening the time needed to address them, adding that the system has been designed to safeguard community privacy in line with Dubai’s smart city and digital transformation standards.

The pilot is aligned with the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2041, which focuses on sustainable cleanliness practices, urban livability, and the emirate’s wider push for innovation-driven public services.
