New Abu Dhabi airport system lets passengers clear immigration in as little as seven seconds

Clearing immigration in Abu Dhabi could soon take just seven seconds, thanks to a high-tech initiative designed to make airport travel faster and smoother than ever.

According to Gulf News, Abu Dhabi Airports and the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) have signed a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) to roll out the “Smart Travel” system — a major step in transforming how passengers move through the UAE capital’s airport.

The technology uses biometric verification and smart gates to process travelers almost instantly, marking a new era of seamless and intelligent travel. The initiative also supports Abu Dhabi Airports’ vision to achieve a complete “gate-to-kerb” experience in under 12 minutes.

The MoU was formalized at Zayed International Airport by Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports, and Mohammed Ahmed Abdullah Al Kuwaiti, Acting Director General of Ports at ICP.

Sorlini said the partnership reinforces Abu Dhabi’s goal of setting global standards in airport efficiency and passenger comfort. “Together, we aim to raise the standard for efficient, secure, and passenger-centric airport operations,” she stated.

Al Kuwaiti emphasized that the collaboration aligns with the UAE’s broader aviation strategy. “With this agreement, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring border security while enabling fast, intelligent, and seamless travel experiences,” he said.

Beyond faster immigration processing, the partnership also expands cooperation in border control, customs facilitation, emergency preparedness, and staff training. Joint teams will monitor daily operations and performance metrics such as passenger wait times, satisfaction, and throughput efficiency.

The move comes as Abu Dhabi Airports continues to experience record growth, with passenger numbers rising by 44.5 percent in 2023 and 28 percent in 2024, maintaining double-digit gains through the first half of 2025.

As part of the UAE’s drive to position itself as a world leader in aviation, logistics, and tourism, the Smart Travel system underscores the country’s commitment to innovation and world-class traveler experiences.
