Nesthy Petecio’s quest for an Olympic gold medal remains on track as she outsmarted Indian boxer Jaismine Lamboria in the women’s 57kg division round-of-32 bout at the North Paris Arena. Petecio secured a unanimous decision victory early Tuesday morning, Manila time.
The seasoned Filipina boxer, who won silver at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, impressed the judges, winning all five scorecards. Despite Jaismine’s height advantage and youthful energy at 22, Petecio’s experience and tactical prowess proved superior. She consistently landed cleaner, more impactful punches and deftly evaded Jaismine’s attempts to engage.
Petecio is the second Filipino boxer to advance in the competition, following Aira Villegas. She will face French boxer Amina Zidani, the division’s third seed, in the round-of-16 on August 2. Zidani advanced directly to this round with a bye in the round-of-32.
