Nearly half of Filipinos oppose VP Sara Duterte’s impeachment, Pulse Asia survey finds

A recent Pulse Asia survey revealed that 45 percent of Filipinos oppose the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte. The findings, released on Friday, come from the polling firm’s February 2025 Pulso ng Bayan pre-electoral survey.

The survey asked respondents whether they supported or opposed the impeachment move by the House of Representatives. Nearly half disagreed, while 26 percent remained undecided. Only 7 percent did not express an opinion due to a lack of awareness on the issue.

Regionally, opposition to impeachment was strongest in Mindanao, where 88 percent rejected it, followed by the Visayas at 46 percent.

The same poll also gauged public trust in the Senate’s ability to conduct a fair impeachment trial. A third (35 percent) of respondents believed the Senate would not be impartial, while 21 percent had confidence in its fairness. The remaining 33 percent were undecided. Mindanao respondents showed the most skepticism, with 66 percent doubting the Senate’s impartiality, whereas a plurality in Metro Manila (40 percent) believed the trial would be fair.

Meanwhile, awareness of the impeachment case is high, with 92 percent of respondents stating they had read, heard, or watched news about it.

Duterte’s impeachment, initiated by the lower house on February 5 with over 200 lawmakers backing the move, is now pending in the Senate. However, Senate President Chiz Escudero has indicated that the trial will only commence after President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s State of the Nation Address in July.
