Nearly 30 Nueva Ecija bands to unite for first-ever Unang Sigaw Project

Nueva Ecija’s music scene is about to make history with the Unang Sigaw Project—a groundbreaking collaboration that brings together almost 30 bands and artists from across the province to create one powerful original composition honoring the bravery of the Unang Sigaw ng Nueva Ecija.

Spearheaded by musician and IT manager and Dubai-based Christian Nava, the project is the first of its kind in the Philippines, merging the talents of veteran and returning musicians to pay tribute to a pivotal moment in Philippine history—the 1896 Cry of Nueva Ecija, when thousands of Katipuneros, led by Mariano Llanera and Pantaleon Valmonte, rose against Spanish colonial rule.

“Pure passion,” Nava said, when asked what sparked the idea. “The concept started during the pandemic when I gathered members from different bands who were my friends. When I saw the potential, I decided to take it to a bigger scale—bringing together the entire province. And what better song to unite us than Unang Sigaw, a piece deeply rooted in our history?”

The lineup reads like a who’s who of Nueva Ecija’s original music community. Many of the participants have been active for over two decades, while some returned to the scene after 15 years of inactivity just to be part of the historic venture. The music video, set for release on September 4, 2025, will feature a rich mix of genres—rock, hip-hop, reggae, metal, indie, and spoken word—capturing the diversity of the province’s creative spirit.

Nava hopes the project will resonate far beyond local audiences. With some members now based in Dubai, the US, Canada, and other GCC countries, the music is crafted to connect with Filipinos worldwide, particularly Millennials and Gen Z who are shaping modern cultural identity.

“This is the first time something like this is happening,” Nava explained. “We’re confident it will spark interest and pride among our kababayans abroad.”

The song itself carries a message of courage, designed to inspire not only by recounting the heroism of the province’s forebears but also by reflecting the resilience of today’s generation.

Looking ahead, Nava envisions a massive live performance with all participating artists sharing one stage. The team is also laying the groundwork for the Nueva Ecija Band Organization (NEBO), aimed at giving emerging bands a platform for gigs and much-needed exposure in a challenging industry.
