Miss Universe Thailand national director Nawat Itsaragrisil publicly apologized following tensions that arose during the Miss Universe Host Country event, where several delegates walked out amid controversy over his earlier remarks.
Speaking on stage before delegates on November 5, Itsaragrisil—who also serves as Miss Universe Asiana vice president—acknowledged the intense pressure surrounding the competition. “You must understand the pressure is a lot. I am human. Sometimes I cannot control. But by the way, I have not [intended] to harm anyone. Because I respect all of you,” he said.
The Thai director bowed to the candidates as he continued, “I have to say I’m so sorry this happened. I want to take this opportunity to apologize for the delegates. If anyone [was] not comfortable this happened, I’m so sorry.”
He also addressed Miss Universe fans, urging them to verify reports circulating online. “I’m sorry for the [Miss] Universe fans around the world, too. I wish all messages must be right. Because I saw so many messages [that showed] some [words] that I didn’t say. Please check everything on our website,” he said.
Reports had surfaced that Itsaragrisil called Miss Mexico Fátima Bosch “dumb” during a sponsor shoot reprimand, prompting her and several other contestants to walk out. “But it’s past,” he said briefly, before expressing excitement for the upcoming coronation night on November 21, which will be attended by 14,000 fans.
Later, in a separate interview with Thai media, an emotional Itsaragrisil broke down in tears. “It’s like I’m always being bullied for no reason,” he said, appearing visibly distressed.
The Miss Universe Organization has since stated that certain activities organized by Miss Universe Thailand—such as a “Special Dinner & Talk Show” where fans voted for contestants online—were not officially authorized. Itsaragrisil clarified these were part of sponsor commitments under the host country’s marketing package.
“I feel sorry for Thailand. I feel sorry for our sponsors,” he said during the tearful press conference.
