To ensure the security of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s third State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 22, a nationwide gun ban will be implemented. The Permit to Carry Firearms Outside of Residence (PTCFOR) Secretariat announced that all PTCFORs will be suspended from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on that day.
“The suspension is a precautionary measure to ensure public safety and security during the event,” the PTCFOR Secretariat was quoted as saying in a GMA Integrated News report.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) will deploy around 22,000 police personnel to secure the event. PNP chief Police General Rommel Marbil mentioned, “Last time we deployed about 22,000 personnel, and it will be the same this time unless there are threats.”
Currently, no specific threats have been identified, but Marbil emphasized the need to prepare for possible inconveniences. “Right now, we don’t see any threats but what I am saying is we should look at possible inconveniences,” he added.
Progressive groups are expected to march and protest during the SONA, as confirmed by Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan). Marbil assured that the PNP will exercise maximum tolerance with protesters and appealed for them to avoid causing public disruptions.
President Marcos has instructed the House of Representatives to accommodate everyone who wishes to attend the SONA. House Secretary General Reginald Velasco shared, “I had a chit-chat with the President yesterday and he said to me, ‘Accommodate all of them.’”
More than 2,000 individuals from various sectors have expressed their intention to attend the SONA. With the session hall’s seating capacity limited to 2,000, the House will add seats and open several function rooms to accommodate additional guests.
As an added security measure, the Batasang Pambansa will be locked down starting July 19, the Friday before the SONA.
