President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. honored the nation’s “unsung heroes” as the Philippines marked National Heroes Day on Monday. In his speech, he praised ordinary Filipinos, such as teachers, farmers, and healthcare workers, for their vital roles in nation-building.
“Today, we pay tribute to the countless unsung heroes whose contributions are no less significant in building and pushing our nation forward,” Marcos stated, emphasizing the importance of those who work behind the scenes to support the country. He highlighted the efforts of farmers who cultivate the land, workers who drive the economy, educators who shape young minds, healthcare workers who save lives, and civil servants who serve the public.
Marcos also reflected on the courage of the nation’s ancestors, whose sacrifices have secured the freedom enjoyed today. He recalled historical figures such as Lapu-Lapu, who resisted foreign invasion, and Andres Bonifacio, along with the Katipuneros, who fought for independence. He also mentioned national heroes like Jose Rizal, Apolinario Mabini, and Emilio Jacinto, noting their enduring legacy and inspiring commitment to a better future.
“In honoring our heroes, we affirm as our own the values, virtues, and ideals they stood for,” he concluded.
