NASA is calling for volunteers to participate in a year-long isolation experiment, simulating life on Mars. This initiative is part of the agency’s preparations for human exploration of the red planet. The selected four volunteers will join NASA’s second simulated Mars surface mission, CHAPEA, scheduled to start in spring 2025 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.
The experiment, taking place in a 3D-printed habitat named Mars Dune Alpha, aims to mimic the challenges astronauts will face on Mars, including resource limitations, equipment malfunctions, and communication delays. This follows the first year-long Mars experiment initiated in June 2023, with participants still in isolation.
Applicants must be healthy, non-smoking US citizens aged between 30 and 55, fluent in English, and possess a master’s degree in a STEM field, alongside professional experience or pilot training. The application window remains open until April 2, offering a unique opportunity for those keen on aiding NASA’s Mars exploration goals.
