NAIA to introduce self-service kiosks and biometric gates in modernization push

The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) is set for a full system overhaul this year through a partnership with US-based Collins Aerospace, the New NAIA Infra Corp. (NNIC) announced on Thursday.

NNIC president Ramon Ang said the long-awaited upgrade will turn NAIA into one of the most modern and efficient airports in the region, promising a better experience for travelers.

A support team from Collins Aerospace is scheduled to arrive in May, with key systems for passenger processing, baggage tracking, and resource management expected to be up and running by August.

By September, NAIA will introduce self-service check-in kiosks, pre-security e-gates, biometric boarding gates, and self-bag drop stations to speed up procedures and enhance security. These upgrades aim to cut waiting times by replacing multiple document checks with biometric screening.

Other improvements include real-time flight updates on the NAIA website, better baggage tracking to reduce lost luggage, enhanced security systems, and optimized staff deployment through a new operational database.

The airport will also roll out an automated billing system to simplify transactions with airlines for various fees.
