NAIA Terminal 3 scheduled power maintenance to continue until May 28 amid upgrades

Terminal 3 at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) is currently undergoing a series of power maintenance activities, according to the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA). The maintenance, which started on Monday and is slated to conclude on May 28, is part of an extensive upgrade to the terminal’s electrical systems that began last year. The project involves replacing worn out medium voltage switchgear components at eight different electrical substations within the terminal.

As a result of the maintenance, various sectors of Terminal 3 will experience temporary shutdowns, affecting air conditioning and lighting in several areas including the parking lots, concourses, departure and arrival zones, boarding and bus gates, and other facilities. The functionality of elevators, escalators, and walkalators will also be intermittently disrupted, mainly during midnight or early morning hours to minimize inconvenience.

Additionally, an unexpected 30-minute power outage occurred at the terminal on Tuesday morning due to a power fluctuation in the surrounding area of Pasay City, though this was not related to the scheduled maintenance activities. This follows several significant power outages the terminal faced from 2022 to 2023.

In a separate incident on the same day, a lightning red alert caused the diversion of nine Manila-bound flights to Clark International Airport. The flights, which included services from AirAsia Philippines, AirSwift, Philippine Airlines, PAL Express, Cebu Pacific, and Singapore Airlines, were temporarily halted due to a thunderstorm affecting Metro Manila and its adjacent provinces. The flights were able to return to Naia by approximately 10 p.m. after the red alert was lifted at around 6:10 p.m.
