The New NAIA Infrastructure Corporation (NNIC), the private operator of Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), clarified that the recent hike in overnight parking fees was implemented to improve access for passengers, not to boost profits.
Angelito Alvarez, NNIC General Manager, stated during the 2024 Aviation Summit in Pasay City that the fourfold increase from P300 to P1,200 for overnight parking was a “conscious decision” aimed at managing limited parking slots. The revised rates include P480 for motorcycles and P2,400 for buses.
“We want to discourage overnight parking,” Alvarez explained, noting that long-term parking occupies space that could serve multiple vehicles, as the average parking time is only three hours.
The NNIC is developing a new parking area at NAIA Terminal 3 with around 2,500 slots, expected to open within two weeks.
Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista defended the fee hike, emphasizing that airport facilities should primarily serve passengers, not those parking overnight for other purposes, such as visiting nearby casinos.
However, House Assistant Minority Leader Arlene Brosas criticized the increase, calling it an “outright attack” on workers and travelers. Brosas also pointed out that no significant airport upgrades have been seen since NNIC took over operations in mid-September.
The new parking rates took effect on October 1.
