The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) has refuted claims made by director Darryl Yap that his controversial film, The Rapists of Pepsi Paloma, is currently under review. The agency clarified on January 29 that the film has not been accepted for review due to missing legal requirements.
Yap previously stated in a social media post on January 28 that the film was under MTRCB’s scrutiny, following a court decision that ordered the removal of its teaser while allowing its full release. However, the board denied this, explaining that the movie’s distributor, PinoyFlix, had yet to submit three required legal clearances from the Regional Trial Court, the Department of Justice, and the Office of the City Prosecutor.
MTRCB emphasized that it follows a strict review process and will not tolerate misinformation that could undermine its role in regulating film content. The agency warned that any attempt to mislead the public would be addressed according to the law.
The film, which centers on the life and alleged rape case of 1980s actress Pepsi Paloma, has already sparked controversy. A teaser featured a scene implying that comedian Vic Sotto was involved in the case, prompting him to file a writ of habeas data against Yap. Sotto also filed multiple cyber libel cases, demanding the removal of promotional materials related to the film.
While the court partially approved Sotto’s petition by ordering the teaser’s removal, it upheld Yap’s right to release the movie, citing artistic freedom and public interest.
