Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) commuters can now enjoy the convenience of cashless payments and free Wi-Fi, as the Department of Transportation (DOTr) officially launched these digital upgrades on Friday.
The new system enables passengers to pay their fares using GCash, debit, or credit cards. During the launch held at the One Ayala Station, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon highlighted the uniqueness of the initiative. “This system is actually the first in the world,” he said.
In support of the cashless rollout, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) also activated free Wi-Fi connections across MRT-3 stations. According to DICT Secretary Henry Aguda, the move aims to assist passengers who rely on e-wallets for payment by ensuring they have reliable internet access while at the station.
Aguda added that the government is also exploring ways to extend Wi-Fi connectivity inside train cars, with the goal of maintaining internet access throughout the commute.
