Mother and two children fall to deaths at Niagara Falls in apparent intentional act

A tragic incident unfolded on October 28 as a mother and her two young children fell to their deaths at Niagara Falls. According to New York State Park Trooper James O’Callaghan, 33-year-old Chianti Means, her 9-year-old son Roman Rossman, and her 5-month-old daughter Mecca Means crossed over a safety rail near Goat Island before going over the falls.

The New York State Park Police and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the scene, confirming that initial findings suggest the incident was intentional. Despite a thorough search and rescue effort, authorities reported no successful recovery of the individuals.

“This incident presents no public safety threat,” police stated, emphasizing the high level of security around the falls. O’Callaghan noted that “it’s not something where they just stumbled in,” underscoring the deliberate nature of the act.

While witness statements remain confidential during the ongoing investigation, O’Callaghan remarked that some testimonies were “alarming.” He further stated that while the act appeared intentional, the underlying reasons remain uncertain, adding, “The reason why is tougher to answer.”
