Moscow Metro to run 90% new trains by 2030 with record-breaking upgrade plan

The Moscow Metro is on track for a major transformation, with officials confirming that more than 90% of all trains will be replaced with modern units by the year 2030. This move comes as part of the city’s long-term effort to modernize its transport system and improve the commuter experience.

According to Deputy Mayor Maxim Liksutov, the capital recently signed the world’s largest train supply deal at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, which will bring over 700 new ‘Moskva‑2026’ cars to the Metro system starting in 2026 and continuing through 2027.

“Under the directive of Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, we regularly update the rolling stock of the Moscow Metro,” Liksutov said. “Over the past 15 years, the share of new trains in the metro has increased from about 13% to 77%. We plan that by 2030, this figure will rise to more than 90%, and there will be no lines in the metro without modern trains.”

Currently, the Moskva-2024 series, among the most advanced metro trains globally, are already in operation on the Zamoskvoretskaya and Troitskaya lines. These trains are praised for their superior comfort and cutting-edge safety features, setting a new standard in urban transit.

The large-scale upgrade is part of Moscow’s broader urban infrastructure development and marks another step in maintaining the city’s Metro as one of the most efficient and visually stunning systems in the world.
