Dubai Police have intensified efforts to curb begging during Ramadan, resulting in the arrest of 202 individuals within the first two weeks of the holy month. Brig Ali Salem Al Shamsi, director of Suspects and Criminal Phenomena Department at the Dubai Police, disclosed that the majority of those apprehended exploited visit visas to solicit quick money from the public’s generosity.
The arrests comprised 112 men and 90 women, with penalties awaiting offenders. Per Dubai Police regulations, beggars face a minimum fine of Dh5,000 and imprisonment for up to three months. Moreover, stringent measures await those orchestrating begging activities, with potential imprisonment of no less than six months and a fine not exceeding Dh100,000 for organizers.
Al Shamsi issued a stern warning to the public, urging them against engaging with beggars out of sympathy. He emphasized the importance of reporting any instances of illegal begging, urging citizens to utilize the ‘Police Eye’ service on the Dubai Police smart app or dial 901. Additionally, he stressed the significance of directing donations solely to registered and legitimate charitable organizations to ensure assistance reaches deserving individuals rather than dubious groups or individuals.
