President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced that more Filipinos are expected to leave the conflict-stricken Gaza Strip by Saturday at the latest, following reassurances from the Israeli government.
President Marcos has been assured by the Israeli authorities that Filipinos will be allowed to use the Rafah Crossing to exit into Egypt. This development comes as the Philippine government intensifies efforts to ensure the safety of its citizens amid escalating tensions in the region.
According to Marcos, the Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines, Ilan Fluss, successfully communicated with both the Foreign Minister of Israel and Philippine Ambassador Junie Laylo to facilitate the safe passage of Filipino nationals.
The Philippine government has prepared resources, including buses and support from its embassy in Cairo, to assist citizens once they cross the border. President Marcos emphasized the readiness of Philippine officials who have been stationed at the Rafah Crossing, awaiting the evacuation.
The Rafah Crossing Point, which lies on the border between Egypt and the Gaza Strip, serves as the sole exit point for those seeking to leave the area.
The gesture of assistance has also been extended to nationals from other Southeast Asian countries stranded at the border, showcasing the Philippines’ leadership and commitment to humanitarian aid in the region.
President Marcos expressed hope that the Israeli promise will be fulfilled, enabling the safe return of all Filipinos who wish to leave. He acknowledged the complexities faced by families, particularly those involving Palestinian spouses of Filipino citizens, who are currently not permitted to leave Gaza. The President underscored the sensitivity of these familial situations as the government works through the challenges of evacuation.
