The Miss Universe Philippines Organization (MUPH) issued an official statement on November 22, condemning the video commentary made by Adam Genato, a pageant vlogger and accredited MUPH media partner, regarding Miss Universe Asia 2024, Chelsea Manalo.
In the video, Genato compared Chelsea Manalo to other past candidates, such as Ahtisa Manalo and Christi McGarry, implying they could have performed better. “Kung si Ahtisa Manalo ‘tong ipinadala natin ngayon dito sa Mexico… siguro hindi na tayo matutulog,” he remarked, further pointing out the perceived lack of “Barbie-looking” attributes in Manalo compared to Denmark’s winner.
MUPH denounced these comments, labeling them as “unfair, insensitive, hurtful, and dismissive of her accomplishments.” They described the remarks as a form of “bullying” and “irresponsible vlogging.” The organization stressed the need for content creators to uphold respect and responsibility in their platforms, especially when discussing pageant representatives. “Making potentially or intentionally controversial statements for clout and engagement, but at the expense of delegates, is detestable,” MUPH stated.
Following the backlash, Genato publicly apologized to Chelsea Manalo and the MUPH through a video message.
MUPH reiterated its gratitude to its media partners who responsibly support the pageant industry and called for unity in fostering a safe space for its delegates.
