Miss Universe org strips Thailand’s Opal Chuangsri of third runner-up title over contract breach

The Miss Universe Organization has officially withdrawn the 2024 third runner-up title from Thailand’s Suchata “Opal” Chuangsri, citing a breach of contractual obligations tied to her reign.

In a statement released on April 22 via its official website, the organization revealed that TPN Global—the franchise holder for Miss Universe Thailand—failed to follow established guidelines by allowing its titleholder to join another pageant before her reign concluded.

“We have discovered that TPN Global did not comply with the protocols set by the National Directors (ND) by sending a Miss Universe Queen to participate in another pageant before completing her reign,” the statement said. “We deeply regret any incidents where these actions have violated our internal protocols and expectations.”

While the organization refrained from naming Opal directly, it confirmed the revocation of the third runner-up title awarded at the Miss Universe 2024 competition held in Mexico. This comes shortly after Opal was crowned Miss World Thailand 2025 and confirmed to be competing at the upcoming Miss World pageant in India on May 31.

“For this reason, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw the third runner-up title from the person who had been honored with it, due to the breach of her contractual obligations by participating in an external pageant,” the Miss Universe Organization stated.

The group emphasized that holding a Miss Universe title is “not only an honor but also a responsibility that requires dedication and respect for the commitments agreed upon.”

Moving forward, the organization will implement stricter guidelines. Starting May 1, 2025, National Directors will be barred from allowing titleholders to join any other pageant during their 12-month reign.

“This decision underscores our expectation that all winners fulfill their duties throughout their entire reign. The actions of the ND compromise the decorum and professionalism of the Queen’s full 12-month service,” it added.

The Miss Universe Organization also reaffirmed its commitment to integrity and mutual respect, thanking its partners and contestants for upholding its mission to “inspire and empower through the Miss Universe brand.”
