Mindoro church issues public apology following backlash over Julie Anne San Jose’s performance

The Apostolic Vicariate of San Jose in Mindoro and Rev. Fr. Carlito M. Dimaano of the Nuestra Señora del Pilar Shrine have issued public apologies following a viral performance by singer Julie Anne San Jose at a church event. The incident, which took place during the “Heavenly Concert” on October 6, drew criticism online for the singer’s song choice and outfit, which many deemed inappropriate for a religious setting.

In a statement posted on the Apostolic Vicariate’s official Facebook page, Fr. Dimaano took “full responsibility for all that happened,” acknowledging the mistakes made during the event. “We are very sorry for those who have been offended and scandalized. We seek your understanding and beg for forgiveness,” the vicariate said.

Fr. Dimaano personally apologized, explaining that the event had been a secular concert held in the church, which caused offense to many. “Inaamin ko pong may mga mali kaming desisyon ukol dito. Inaako ko po ang lahat ng mga pagkakamaling ito,” he said, taking accountability for the decisions made.

He also expressed his apologies to Julie Anne and fellow performer Jessica Villarubin, who faced negative comments following the performance. “Kung maibabalik ko lamang po ang panahon, disin sana’y naisakatuparan ng tama at wagas ang gawaing ito na alay kay Maria,” Fr. Dimaano added, vowing that such an incident would not happen again.

Julie Anne San Jose, in her own statement posted on Instagram, apologized for the distress caused by her performance, stating, “I truly sincerely apologize. This is a lesson learned and it is assured that it will not be repeated.”

Her management, Sparkle, also took responsibility for the situation, emphasizing that the singer had no intention of disrespecting the Church. “Julie Anne only fulfilled her duties and commitment as a true professional,” Sparkle said, adding that it was their job to coordinate with the organizers for the event.

The controversy arose after videos of Julie Anne performing ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” in a gown with a high slit went viral, prompting concerns from churchgoers who found the performance inappropriate for the venue.
